How to Seek Nearness (Tawassul) to Allaah – Ibn Baaz

Question:
What is the general precept (guideline) for seeking nearness to Allah, The Lofty and Majestic?
Answer:
Seeking nearness (tawassul) to Allah through utilization of His Names and Qualities is something that has been legislated for the Muslim, and it is from the means of obtaining a response to supplication; According to the statement of Allah, The Mighty and Majestic:
وَلِلّهِ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا
“And to Allah belongs the best name, so call on Him by way of them.”
(Surah al-a’raaf 7:180)
As well as what has been affirmed by him صلى الله عليه و سلّم in many narrations from seeking nearness to Allah by way of His Names and Attributes. It has also been legislated seeking nearness to Allah, Glorified is He: by believing in Him, loving Him, and by the rest of the righteous actions.
From that, is having love for the prophets of Allah, His messengers, as well as the believers from amongst His slaves. Also from that is seeking nearness to Allah with righteousness toward the parents, abstaining from committing illegal sexual intercourse, and fulfilling the trust; Due to the authentic narration that has come in the story of the companions of the cave, those who the boulder had closed in upon them and they were unable to move it. There were three of them, and so they supplicated to Allah, Glorified is He, and they sought nearness to Him by way of their righteous actions, so the boulder was removed for them.
Their report has been affirmed in the two sahihs (Bukhari & Muslim). The first of them sought nearness through his righteousness to his parents, the second by his abstention from illegal sexual intercourse after having the ability to do so, and the third by way of fulfilling the trusts for the people who entrusted him. And Allah is the One who grants success!

What is the ruling regarding suicide in Islam?

Question: What is the ruling regarding suicide in Islaam?
Answer: Suicide is when a person kills himself intentionally by whatever means. This is haraam (forbidden) and regarded as amongst the major sins, and likewise included in the general statement of Allah (the Exalted):
{And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the Wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him}, [Soorah an-Nisaa, Aayah 93].

And it is established from the Sunnah (authentically related traditions) on the authority of the Prophet [Muhammad] (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) who said:

“Indeed, whoever (intentionally) kills himself, then certainly he will be punished in the Fire of Hell, wherein he shall dwell forever”, [Bukhaaree (5778) and Muslim (109 and 110)].

In reality, the one who commits suicide, generally does so because of his desperate situation, either as a direct result of an act of Allah or a human being. So you find him unable to cope with that which has afflicted him, and in actual fact he is like one who is calling for help from the scorching heat of the fire. So he has progressed from that which was tough (bad) to that which is worse. And if he was patient, then Allaah would have assisted him in dealing with the difficulty.

Islam and human happiness

If we examine all the orders and laws of Islam, we find that every single law or order aims at bringing happiness to the individual. This applies to Islamic regulations with regard to worship, economics, penal laws and all other aspects of life.

The Belief in Allaah and Psychological Security
When a person believes in Allaah, this belief gives him a strong feeling of security, which is a basic psychological need. This belief in Allaah gives the believer a strong support in critical moments and gives him continuous hope against all sources of despair. This belief gives strength to the sick and hope to the hopeless.

The Belief in Allaah and Ethical Responsibility
A person who believes in Allaah tends to be more ethically responsible than a person who does not believe. This belief makes a person feel that he is being observed by Allaah everywhere and on all occasions. This feeling makes a person try to be as uncorrupted and as far from sin as possible.

The Way To Achieve Happiness

It is the nature of every person to seek happiness. Some people strive to seek material happiness in this world away from religion, thinking that this is the true happiness. But this kind of happiness will be succeeded by pain and sorrow at the Day of Judgment, and its people will know that their striving led them only to misery and not happiness.

While others know that the true way to happiness is to obey God and follow His religion. For them the pleasures and riches of the world are of little consequence. When this happiness penetrates and fills the heart of the believer he does in fact live in this world as if he were in Paradise. Those are the people who find true happiness in this world.

What kind of happiness could be greater than that of someone who humbles himself to God, worships Him, strives for His pleasure, and strives to enter Paradise and have salvation from Hellfire?
